Trials for the release of over 100 prisoned during protests and
demonstrations started yesterday. Many of the 100 people arrested were charged with vandalism, rioting, disturbing people, and even charges of conspiracy against the Islamic Republic of Iran!

Opposition presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi claimed that the prisoned detainees were forced to confess and many were subjected to ‘medieval torture’.

Former President, Mohammad Khatami, also announced on his website, expressed that these trials would not “lead to ignorance of the real crimes.” It definitely did not, as this trial raised hopes to many of the families and friends of the detainees and of coarse, millions of people protesting against the Islamic Republic.

The Iranian Government is not giving up its fight to putting Ahmadinejad as president again, as Supreme Leader, Khamenei, is scheduled to officially endorse Ahmadinejad as the winner. Ahmadinejad will also be sworn into the presidency this Wednesday. Many predict the swearing in of Ahmadinejad will cause massive protests and demonstrations in many parts of Iran.

One of Iran’s most powerful cleric, Rafsanjani, has called on the Iranian government to release those people arrested due to protests for last month’s disputed presidential election.

“There is no need to have these numbers of people in prison,” Rafsanjani said during his highly anticipated Sermon today.

He later added, “Let them come back to their families. Let the enemy not laugh at us and criticize us. We must sympathize with those who have suffered damages. The system cannot lose them. If the system re approaches them they will come back to us.”

Tens of thousands of people gathered around Tehran University as Rafsanjani gave his speech according to witnesses at the speech. Iranian police used tear gas to disperse some of the crowds, but others kept gathering around.

Iranian Plane Crashes into Field

A Caspian Airline jetliner, carrying 168 people, nosedived into a field after taking off from Tehran. The impact shredded the plane and killed the 168 passengers aboard. This is the worst Plane crash, Iran has had in over 6 years.

The Caspian Airline aircraft plowed a deep, long trench into farm fields outside the village of Jannat Abad, and the aircraft was blasted to bits. Flaming wreckage, body parts and personal items were strewn over a 200 yards of field. Firefighters put out blazes from the crash, but smoke smoldered from the pit for hours. Emergency workers and Investigators searched for clues leading back to the cause of the crash.

The maintenance of Iranian airline air crafts has suffered greatly in the past decades, experts say. U.S. sanctions prevent Iran from updating its 30-year-old American aircraft and make it difficult to get European spare parts or planes as well. The country has come to rely on Russian aircraft, many of them from the Soviet Union. The parts for them now harder to get since the Soviet Union‘s fall.

Despite arrests and beatings, Iranians haven’t given up yet on overthrowing the government.

Anti-government protesters tried to gather outside Tehran University on Thursday, despite a heavy police presence and sharp warnings from the government that the planned demonstration was unauthorized.

With cell phone calls and text messaging still shut down, the Iranian people still found ways to post the news on social sites like twitter and facebook.
